Description

In the Photography class at On The GO Academy we teach students how to use a camera and how to turn the idea in their mind into a physical photograph. The student will learn the basic essentials including common topics such as exposure, focus, and editing. They will also learn how to see the beauty in a scene to create an image.

Teaching kids photography doesn’t just give them the skills to take a good photograph! Photography helps kids to exercise their creative muscles and encourages exploration. It builds valuable visual and critical thinking skills for later in life. It’s important to use plenty of encouragement and build on each skill, moving on at whatever pace works for the child’s skill level. We encourage practice with photography exercises and giving them time with a camera.

Camera suggestion: one that’s durable, easy to use, and offers different shooting modes. For example, waterproof cameras are great for kids because they are hard to destroy. An older child may do well with a used, inexpensive DSLR camera. As the instructor I will be bringing in my own camera to allow the students to practice functions, shooting photos, and many methods taught throughout the class. However, if students would like to bring a camera from home it is ideal so they can become more familiar with it. Bringing in a camera also would be helpful to allow more freedom to take pictures during class vs waiting for others to complete their time and share the camera amongst the class.
